17 October – 4 December 2014
Josh Lilley is delighted to open Control Lapse, a group show featuring Analia Saban, Anissa Mack, Jesse Greenberg, Kathleen Ryan, Kelly Kleinschrodt, Niall Macdonald, Nicholas Hatfull, Patrick Jackson and Ruairiadh O'Connell.
The exhibition examines the practices of 9 artists from London, Glasgow, New York, and Los Angeles, who focus on the processes of casting within their work. Each individual brings a unique approach to the show — a spectrum of materials that combine clay, ceramic, rubber, soap, pewter, concrete, resin, plaster, and polyurethane, incorporating a range of ideas and motives from process, repetition and the artefact through to intimacy, cultural excess, coffee culture, and motherhood.
The exhibition also seeks to explore ideas of letting go within artistic production, the necessary loosening of control wherein an artist has to step aside, if only momentarily, and discover the outcome of their work. Whether this be through the use of a kiln, a third-party fabricator, or simply the mixing of materials in a tray or mould, Control Lapse celebrates the willing acceptance of the unknown into the otherwise pre-planned nature of artistic practice.
