Josh Lilley is pleased to present I Had the Landscape in My Arms, a group exhibition of new international sculpture.

The title of this show is abbreviated from Helen Frankenthaler: I had the landscape in my arms as I painted it. I had the landscape in my mind and shoulder and wrist. Formally and conceptually, the six artists in this exhibition employ aesthetics of compression, framing and encapsulation — of having the landscape in one's arms, and squeezing it into form. Sculpture as paté, aspic, bundle, or jigsaw. A careful containment; some gentle pressure.

The six sculptors in this exhibition share an overlapping geography between California, New York, London and Vienna, and a common toolbox of media including clay, found objects, metamorphic rock and materials from the hardware store. I Had the Landscape in My Arms is not a proposition about a single recent school or movement all the work is individualistic and strongly voiced, with its own particular concerns but it is explicitly an exhibition about a certain weight of contemporary sculptural gesture, and sculpture as a natural means of understanding, organising and representing the landscape of today.

Holly Hendry (b. 1990, London; works in London) was the subject of a solo exhibition at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, in 2017, and will participate in the 2018 Liverpool Biennial. She was the 2013 recipient of the Woon Foundation Prize for Painting and Sculpture.

Anne Libby (b. 1987, Los Angeles; works in New York) is a graduate of Bard College, Annandale, New York, and the Rhode Island School of Design. She held a solo exhibition at Night Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2015, and participated in a three-person show with Peter Nagy and Barry Le Va at Magenta Plains, New York, in 2017. This will be her first exhibition in the UK.

Nevine Mahmoud (b. 1988, London, works in Los Angeles) is a graduate of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and Goldsmiths University, London. She has participated in exhibitions at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; White Cube, London; Ballroom Marfa; and 356 Mission, Los Angeles.

Sarah Pichlkostner (b. 1988, St. Johann im Pongau, Austria; works in London) was selected for the De Ateliers residency in Amsterdam from 2014-2016, and was the subject of a solo presentation with Josh Lilley at FIAC, Paris, in 2015. In 2017 she participated in the exhibition In Between, organised by the Kunsthalle Wien in the former Vienna studio of Franz West. She held her first UK solo exhibition at Josh Lilley in 2017.

Annabeth Rosen (b. 1957, Brooklyn; works in Davis, CA) is the Robert Arneson Endowed Chair at the University of California, Davis. Her work is in collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Archives of American Art, Washington DC.

Kathleen Ryan (b. 1984, Santa Monica, CA; works in New York) was the subject of the 2017 annual exhibition at the Theseustempel, Vienna, organised by the Kunsthistorisches Museum. She participated in the 2015 Frieze Sculpture Park project, held a solo exhibition at Ghebaly Gallery, Los Angeles, in 2017, and will have her second solo exhibition at Josh Lilley in October 2018.
